Thought of the Day: Ben Nelson, Specter, and Churchill
That is perhaps the first and last time you’ll see those three names in the same headline.
If the Democrats have to put up with Arlen Specter, maybe they should force the Republicans to live with Ben Nelson. It’s not like he’s doing anything to help the Obama Administration or Democrats in Congress at the moment.
Were Nelson to defect, I think most Democrats would be relieved (much as most in the GOP were with Specter) — they wouldn’t have to suck up to him on every single damn vote. They’d be far better off talking to Lugar, Collins, and Snowe.
Both Specter and Nelson remind me of the story, perhaps apocryphal, of Churchill’s response when he learned that Italy had declared war on Great Britain: “It’s only fair — we had to put up with having them on our side last time.”
