A Final June 4th Thought

Both 1989 and 2009.

Would it really have been that hard for Obama to make a passing mention in his extraordinary speech in Cairo to what happened in Beijing twenty years ago today?  Sure it would have seemed a bit out of place to those in the audience, but it would have sent a powerful message to those in China struggling to promote democracy and human rights.

In the spirit of fairness, I went to the White House website to see whether the Administration had issued any statement.  Here’s what I found:

Search was unable to find any results for Tiananmen, you may have typed your word incorrectly, have entered an empty phrase or are being too specific.

I guess that’s my answer.

UPDATE:  Hillary did issue a statement, but that’s not exactly the same as the President issuing one.  You can bet the Chinese — those in government, those in opposition, and even those on the street — will notice.
