When you put it as "zero out the impact of humans on the environment" vs "my health and that of my family" you have set up a false dichotomy, in my opinion. Long term health of your family (including future generations) depends on the earth being livable. Currently we are spending on our childrens future. It isn't a matter of us needing to walk to work but right now we are driving to work in Hummers because we aren't distributing the cost of the cleanup to those who pollute. Private industry and free market can't help until the costs are centered on those who are consuming. If someone "consumes" future environmental stability they need to be charged for it. It isn't just a matter of paying people to clean, it is a matter of charging those who make it dirty.
