Transparency International has released its 2008 Bribe Payers Index (BPI) (hat tip to Foreign Policy Passport). The BPI shows the most corrupt countries in the world when it comes to greasing the palm with moolah in order to get bid’ness done.
Russia, China, Mexico, and India all seem to require a a little money on the side in order to open doors and make elusive paperwork magical appear (or disappear as your needs may be).
No word on where the Land of Lincoln would fall on this scale… but as we learned yesterday: “If Illinois is not ‘the most corrupt state in the United States, it is certainly one hell of a competitor’ said Robert Grant, Special Agent-in-Charge of the Chicago Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.”
