Overnight Election Thread

I think it was a tactical victory for the McCain campaign, but maybe I’m just quasi-caving.

What did you think?

Dear lord, Charles, were you watching the same debate that I was? I suppose everyone’s “expectations” for her were pretty low, but if you forget about the stupid expectations game for a moment and just ask yourself, honestly, if you saw a woman qualified to be President of the United States tonight, the answer is no, right? It’s getting a little ridiculous to find all of this insider nonsense on political blogs (tactical victory?) when it was obvious to anyone watching the debate, even her supporters, that she didn’t know what the hell she was talking about most of the time. She recited talking points, over and over again, badly.

Biden is clearly prepared to step into the presidency should the need arise. He more than demonstrated that tonight. He knows his stuff. Palin, on the other hand, was ridiculous. That woman could be President soon?! It’s absurd.

Only the most deluded members of the Republican “base” could see this as a victory for the McCain campaign. How does someone actually pull a lever for McCain/Palin on election day? How could anyone want to take that reckless gamble?

Stop expecting so little of this woman. Start expecting a woman prepared to President of the United States at a moment’s notice. Does she meet that standard? Absolutely not.

Sorry Charlie. The McCain camp needed a game changer and that simply did not happen. Palin was capable of that-look at her speech at the convention. She did not do it last night and Biden pretty much had her beat. The real story last night was not Palin-expectations were so low of her that she had to just show up to beat them. The real story should have been Biden. You know gaffe filled Joe who would have been bashed badly if he beat up on Palin (think Lazio shoving the pen in Hillary’s face in 2000 or George Bush’s “kicked a little ass” over Ferraro back in 2000). Biden could not even pull a Bentsen on Palin’s Quayle; again he would have been trashed. Biden did not come off as condescending or a bully. Biden did very well in the various Democratic primary debates and probably would have been called the winner of most of them had his campaign actually mattered (and he certainly did better than the rest of the second and third tier). He handled Palin and did not come off looking badly. McCain needed to stop Obama’s momentum last night and that did not happen.
