Thought for the Overnight

John McCain said he had looked into Vladimir Putin’s eyes.  Good for him.

But why was he so unwilling to look into Barack Obama’s?  Was he unwilling to show a level of respect he gave to someone he regards as an enemy of the United States?

I actually have an answer for why he wouldn’t look in Barack’s eyes. It’s because if he looked into his eyes, he would be confronted with the honesty and decency of the man. McCain would be able to read “Come on, John, why are you conducting your campaign like this?” there, and he would have no answer. Deep down, McCain knows he’s lying, misrepresenting the facts, playing fast and loose with the truth - whatever you want to call it, he has turned his back on every position he ever held and on any pretense of straight talking, and has apparently decided being President is worth engaging in any low-down weasel-like dishonest I-love-me-some-religious-right-wing-nutjobs pretense going as long as it results in him being President. If he looked in Barack’s eyes he would see: himself. That’s not a pretty sight these days, and it’s one he’s trying to avoid as he sails down that river in Egypt. I keep waiting for McCain to have a Senator Paine moment (from Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) where he bursts out and admits everything he’s saying is a lie! Barack is telling the truth! He’s turned his back on everything he ever believed in! He’s not fit for office! And then he pulls out a pistol he brought home from the ‘Nam and tries to shoot himself, and Barack wrestles it away from him, and he falls weeping into Barack’s arms, whereupon Barack comforts him, patting him on the back and saying forgiving things about knowing how stressful it’s been; and then McCain straightens up, wipes his eyes and says “This is the man who should be President! I lost my head! I lost my way in a fog of desire and ambition. I beg the American people for their forgiveness, and I throw my support to Sen. Obama!” Ah well - I can dream, can’t I.

    Hi Charles,

I have tried to post my haikus on your haiku days, but they don’t seem to come through. I don’t think it’s the captcha.

    One more try :)

    Thursday: “Where is God?”
    “I can’t remember my lines!”
    “Oh Jesus please help.”

One line from the debate didn’t pop out in my mind until after a night’s rest. McCain said, “Pakistan was a failed state until Musharraf came to power.” Apart from the inaccuracy of the statement, it reveals in McCain the old school, “he’s a son-of-a-bitch, but he’s OUR son-of-a-bitch” mentality.
