I've tried to explore some reasons for hope in Flint, my hometown, but many of them depend on things getting so bad in the rest of the country that Flint and Michigan seem appealing again. For example, the U.S. is facing a huge water shortage crisis, especially in the south and California. And, well, Michigan has water. Also, the realities of the world energy situation might make sprawling cities like Houston unworkable, along with far-flung suburbs. But smaller cities like Flint, that are near farmland and water, might be ideal. 

Maybe I'm reaching here, but you never know.
