Pathetic News Day
No, not in the real world, but in The Washington Post. I’ve commented before on how the Post has gone from must-read to afterthought in my news consumption habits. Today’s print edition is a particularly egregious example of why that is the case.
Here’s a rough guesstimate of the number of column inches devoted to some major stories in the Post today:
- Cindy McCain puff piece in the Style section 51
- Chandra Levy (yes, that Chandra Levy) 36
- Obama in Iraq/Maliki timetable 30
- McCain’s wacky wacky Grandpa 26
- Karadzic arrest 25
Here’s a list of the things I learned from the front section of today’s Post that I hadn’t already gleaned from online sources (not counting a story on a proposed RV ban in Montgomery, County, MD):
- Salmonella-tainted jalapenos found in Texas
- Russian government offices are having a hard time deciding whether to hang photos of Medvedev or Putin
- Russian bombers could be deployed to Cuba in retaliation for US missle defense system
- An Italian Capuchin monk has released his second heavy metal CD (alas, no online link)
So basically for my 50 cents, I learned about the Russian bomber story (which got fewer column inches than the Medvedev-Putin portrait story). Oh, and McCain’s feisty Grandpa (if I had actually read it). In fairness, the metal monk story was pretty cool, but that was just a caption and a photo.
So what exactly is the Post selling here? I can’t be the only person who finds it increasingly irrelevant.
Where do you get your international news?
