Desperation?

Another attack ad from the McCain campaign, this one on energy:

After spending the primaries saying he wanted to wage an ideas-based campaign and not make negative attacks, McCain (or his team) have now chosen to go almost exclusively negative.  It turns out that Obama is responsible for high gas prices.  Not Bush, not Congress, not even OPEC.  Not even those favorite Rovian bugaboos, “Democrats” and “liberals.”  Just Obama.

On a day when McCain’s Iraq policy is falling apart, is this a sign of desperation?  Or did his decision to turn management of his campaign over to Steve Schmidt and a bunch of Rove acolytes make such attacks inevitable?  After all, do those guys know any other tune?
